Perfection is an obscene form of procrastination (6/7/25)
Jun 07, 2025
Life is perfect, said no one ever…
Yet if you are honest with yourself, you might discover a harsh reality, each of us is wired for perfection.
We are wired to create order in our lives, instead of chaos.
Some more than others (yes, that is me calling myself out as a recovering perfectionist!)
For the business owner, entrepreneur, and real estate professional, perfectionism is like Superman's cryptonite, causing a significant blind spot that can actually impede our ability to run an effective business.
Case in point.
97% of people simply consume content.
Only 3% create.
It is those creators that leverage success at a high level, over and over again.
An example is our friend Neel Dhingra.
In a few short years, Neel has gone from being relatively unknown to running one of the most successful networks in the industry, the Forward Movement.
He simply gave up perfection and started creating.
Sharran Srivatsaa is another example.
It was under Sharran's leadership that Teles Properties expanded from $340 Million to $3.4 Billion in just five years.
In a few short decades, Sharran has gone on to become the "big dawg" and most creative mind in the industry.
It was a leap of faith that happened by stepping out of the need for perfection.
Here are three tactical ways you can step out of your own way to create a better way of thinking and living:
First, recognize that perfection is simply an obscene form of procrastination.
Awareness is the first key to lasting change.
I challenge you to spend a few minutes at your desk in reflection.
What areas of your life are you trying to be perfect, rather than stepping forward with action?
Are you trying to maintain a perfect relationship or raise perfect children?
Are you trying to optimize your home, office space, technology and systems in a way that is actually blocking your growth?
Are you trying to create the perfect system or perfect piece of content, rather than just launching?
Are you trying to close every client, instead of realizing some clients are simply not the right fit?
By creating awareness, you can begin to create a new set of values to drive you forward.
Progress, not perfection.
Second, take imperfect action.
Write that newsletter.
Publish that video.
Start that marketing campaign.
Begin writing that book.
Make those calls, even though your scripts are not perfect.
Dedicate 80% of your time to taking action, and the other 20% to innovating and experimenting.
Third, learn the skills and build the systems you need to optimize your process.
As you take action, you will begin to find the gaps.
Begin to fill those holes by building systems.
For example, did you find a gap in your product fulfillment process?
What is needed (or who can you hire) to fill that gap?
What technologies or AI systems do you need to help you in your creation process?
Make space in your day to learn, to explore, and to test out different solutions as you create a better process.
One of my mentors wisely said, "Perfection will keep you broke. Progress will make you rich."
These words changed my perspective, and my life.
Apply them to your world, and watch everything change.
Let go of perfection, and ultimately you will regain control.
Then, experiment daily over time.
Watch the magic happen.
Take the five day challenge. Learn to build resilience in your life and business.
